<image:title>Row Characters - METACOMET - Metacomet, aka “King Philip”- The son of the man who welcomed the Pilgrims and brokered peace for thirty years, Metacomet inherits a conspicuous mantle as the anglicized King of the New England Natives – this after his older brother is allegedly poisoned by the United Colonies shortly after assuming his “crown”. Metacomet is suspicious of all colonizers; he is innately political and shrewd, but can only take so much. A trusted advisor betrays Metacomet in 1674. Metacomet orders the execution of the advisor and leaves his corpse exposed just enough to get the attention of Governor Winslow and others. They respond by publicly hanging prominent natives. Philip will artfully lead a promising beginning to the war that assumes his name, and his ignominious death will represent the plight of modern indigenous people for years to come.</image:title>

<image:title>Row Characters - REBEKAH CROMWELL - Rebekah Cromwell - The perfect set-up for Metacomet is hiding weapons in plain sight. Rebekah runs an outpost near the Mount Hope colonial garrison. In peacetime, the outpost provides trade and food for both sides. However, when her father is mistreated and eventually killed by rogue colonials, Rebekah becomes an operative to support the natives and their defense of land. For ten years leading to the spring of 1675, Cromwell is in alliance with Metacomet and his sachems. She’s present at the Plymouth hangings where the flames of violent injustice are fanned.</image:title>

<image:title>Row Characters - SAMUEL MOSELEY - Samuel Moseley - Known early in King Philip’s war as the “Jamaican Pirate”, a son of Boston departs in the 1660’s to re-invent himself as a mariner. He returns with a band of renegades to lead one of the United Colonies’ most successful military units. He’s never commissioned or even recognized as anything more than a henchman. Moseley serves as Governor Winslow’s fixer and executioner. He loosely interprets military orders, winking and nodding himself into three of the war’s most notorious battles. Like Metacomet, Moseley leads and inspires his men. He’d rather fight than run in matters of life and death. Moseley’s smug disdain for life and misguided sense of justice seem to fuel the racial fires that torched through American history.</image:title>

<image:title>Row Characters - BENJAMIN CHURCH - Benjamin Church – America’s first commissioned Army officer. Author of his autobiography, essentially self-aggrandized anecdotes about his successes in King Philip’s War and northern New England. Church tries to fill a moral vacuum, but Josiah Winslow will fill the void perniciously. Church is indignant. He is raised within miles of Philip. He is a well-respected carpenter who ends up marrying into Plymouth royalty. Suspicious of the early colonial war footing, Church eventually wins an argument: gather as many afraid, scared, and disenfranchised natives to fight against Philip, and we’ll win. He becomes masterful at raids, ambushes, and bounty – native women, children and men sold into slavery. Pennies on the head.</image:title>

<image:title>Row Characters - WOOTONEKANUSKE - Wootonekanuska – Mother to Metacomet’s 9 year-old son, she’s every bit as powerful and revered as Metacomet and sachems within the tribal system. Her tactical and leadership skills are legendary among the Wampanoag and regional tribes. Her life is snuffed out near the end of the war. An indication of her status among the regional natives? Her head, too, is positioned on a large stake overlooking Plymouth colony.</image:title>

<image:title>Row Characters - GOVERNOR WINSLOW - Governor Winslow – Irony is not lost on Josiah Winslow, son of Edward Winslow, a trusted, fair, and honest ally to Philip’s father. Josiah Winslow worms his way into Plymouth Colony’s governorship intermittently but settles in just in time to declare America’s first war. Josiah’s war tactics are ineffective, so he’s forced to rely on Moseley and Church to do his bidding. Winslow is lucky to have two captains at the table that can wage, fight and win a war against a decimated native New England population. He’s symbolic of systemic privilege and unbridled power.</image:title>
